The Old Military Base

Recorded history

The Remnants came through the collapse with their weapons, their structure and their mindset intact. The Old Military Base is where the second of those was kept.

It was not a fortress and was never the faction's prize. It was where planning happened, where drills were run, and where a chain of command that had lost its government went on being practised until it stopped being a memory and started being a habit again. Every other survivor group in the region had veterans. The Remnants had somewhere to go on being an army.

They no longer hold it. The archive can establish that much and no more: not when it passed out of their hands, not to whom, and not whether it was taken, traded or simply given up. Nothing on file describes a fight for it. The site is still called Camp Remnant, on the maps and by the people who use them.

Strategic assessment

The faction is unusually candid about the dependency. Without the base they stall; without aggression they starve. Both statements come from the Remnants themselves.

They were made, on their own account, in two places, and they now hold one of them. A city can be occupied by anyone with enough people. What the base gave them was the thing no other party in the region ever had, which was somewhere to go on being made in.

Whether the loss has cost them what they said it would cost them is not something the archive is in a position to measure. It notes only that the Remnants named the condition themselves, before it applied to them.
